What Is the Difference Between a Commercial Diver and a Recreational Diver?
When people hear the word diver, they often think of recreational divers who wear scuba equipment and dive for leisure or sightseeing. Commercial diving, however, is a completely different professional field requiring specialised training and expertise.
Recreational divers dive for leisure, training and underwater exploration, while commercial divers carry out underwater engineering, maintenance, installation, welding, cutting, examination, inspection and construction activities.
Commercial diving operations involve far more than simply placing a diver in the water. Each operation is conducted with a surface-support team, communication systems, a diving control panel, camera recording, risk assessment, task planning and emergency procedures.
Commercial and Industrial Divers
They are trained professionals who work with technical equipment and conduct professional underwater operations in accordance with established safety procedures.

Safety and Coordination in Commercial Diving Operations
During a professional underwater operation, the diver and surface-support team work in continuous coordination. The diver’s air supply, communication, video transmission and task monitoring are managed by the diving control team at the surface.
Before the operation begins, the work area is assessed, task-related risks are identified, the required equipment is inspected and an emergency plan is prepared. Throughout the dive, the diver’s position, breathing-gas supply and working conditions are monitored regularly.
